Weapon drill at Bridport Jiu-Jitsu

As we we train traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu at Ichinen Bridport, weapon drills are an important part of the syllabus.

19 February 2024

Jiu-Jitsu is the all-round fighting system

 Why is that?

At our Bridport based martial arts school "Ichinen Bridport" we train traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. This is not a sport, its a way of life. We focus on self defence skills, physical and mental fitness and well being and trust in friendship with each other.

Discipline, respect, endurance, hard training and focussing on targets. Set up by yourself and your Sensei.

Jiu-Jitsu is not this fancy dress rolling on the floor around sport, but a way of life in the tradition of the ancient warriors.

We train continuously our all-round techniques. We do:

Throws

Locks

Chokes and strangling

Nerve grips

All legal natural weapons

All unnatural weapons

Punching

Kicks

Sparring

Boxing

Hold downs

Close combat

Out door training

* and keep on mind: Karate, Aikido and Judo were made from Jiu-Jitsu >>>

the mother of all Japanese originated martial arts.

Seven most common attacks in Bridport

Master Horst D. Lindenau is the only martial arts teacher in Bridport who teaches self defence in combination with the seven most common attacks. We believe it does not make much sense to train just any martial arts techniques and ignore the reality in the streets.

Grand master Horst D. Lindenau is not only an expert in real self defence (6th Dan Anti Terror Combat and 6th Dan BlackCombat), he served in the security industry as a SIA registered security officer and as a former captain in the German Navy he knows his skills.

The seven most common attacks according to law enforcement

1. One person pushes, hands to chest, which is normally followed by the pusher striking first, to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to the groin or lower legs.

You can join Ichinen Bridport martial arts school adult group and train these valuable skills when you live in Bridport area and are over 14 years of age.

Just text 07968-235486 for your first trial session (£10 only for 1.5 hours)

The most common street attacks

Here at Ichinen Bridport we train the martial arts with a strong focus on self defence. Although our little town on the south west coast of England can still be rated as fairly safe, we do have crime and of cause violence on the streets. But nevertheless, we are not training to be confronted here only, but for a wider range.

About three years ago I could google the topic of "most common attacks" and found results on the gov.com homepages/home office as well as on relevant German police statistics. Shortly after I could copy these results, these statistics been gone. Guess somebody has an interest, not to inform the wider public about this subject.

What you find today, is the list of the most common 10 attacks, which were posted here on the blog about 3 years ago. Makes me smile, since then all what you find online seems to copy this. I know it, as I have made some alterations from the original and all what I find online shows the same :)

In our local Bridport martial arts school we offer traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and the defence against these most common attacks are in each grading syllabus from 4th Kyu upwards.

Here you find the 10 most common street attacks according to law enforcement / UK from 2014.

8. A broken bottle or glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

(10 most common attack according to Law Enforcement)

And of cause we train our self defence armed and unarmed. This sis a small collection of weapons we use for training.

Our training is open for everyone. Please come along, if you are a beginner or an advanced martial artist.

Most common attacks

What are the most common attacks in a street fight?
To know this would improve the approach in training and skills to learn for real combat and therefore I wonder, why there is not much to find online nowadays.

When I published my first post on that subject three years ago, I first concentrated on the 10 most common attacks. My source than was the official page from UK government / law enforcement. They provided the most 100! common attacks.

Checking out the german government equivalent page I found it was very much the same. The first 10 equaled in 9 of them. Makes sense, 2 arms, 2 legs and similar cultural background.

Unfortunately then I only copied the first 20 common attacks and only bookmarked the more. Shortly after that, the links been broken and since than there is no information available. I wonder why?

If you find more please get in touch.

2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.

Would you guess? ### updated ###

When I found this statistic I must admit I was very surprised. What is the most common weapon victims get killed in the USA today? I thought immediately, of course a hand gun.

But no! This deadly weapon is a HAMMER !

And as many things we have got here come from America, there was an incident with a hammer involved in Crewkerne / Dorset. Only a short drive away from Bridport at our nearest train station.

The local paper says: Dorset police are investigating at present after a man was assaulted with a hammer at Crewkerne train station last week. The incident occurred at around 7.00 pm and left the victim with a head injury."

We at Ichinen Bridport will now add a hammer to our "toolbox" and exercise how to defend oneself against hammer attacks. Real street self defence, that's what we teach at our martial arts school. We always keep an eye on the evolution what's going on out there. If you like to learn how to defend yourself and your family, come and visit us at our Dojo and learn street self defence. Our fighting system is Jiu-Jitsu.

Knifing in a town nearby

Update  >>>
Anti Terror Combat is now called BlackCombat!

Last Sunday a 28 year old man got stabbed five times in the town nearby during a street fight with a 41 year old man.

It all happened late night at about 2.30 am and the trouble started outside a pub and then continued along through three streets, ending with the stabbing.

Again that reminds me to a comment of the local police here, that our town doesn't need seminars,
teaching knife defence. Then I was holding a special knife defence seminar for Bridport door staff.

The younger man has been seriously injured, as to read in the daily paper. Of course, knifes can injure very badly. Interesting what a local councillor commented. He said:” We do have trouble in town centre on different occasions, that’s true. Our biggest problem is the lack of police in the town at night.

My answer to that, better safe than sorry. Get prepared. Times are not getting better unfortunately and the evil crime swoops over from big towns. Learn the art of self defence here at Ichinen Bridport Jiu-Jitsu with Master Horst Lindenau. Former Anti-Terror-Kampf Master (from Germany) and Anti Terror Combat chief instructor. Every Thursday in Bridport. Martial Arts for you! Starts 7.00 pm.

This is a selection of nasty weapons you can get confronted with nowadays in a street fight

31 December 2013

Happy new year 2014!

With the knowledge in Martial Arts, a good profound Jiu-Jitsu education here at Ichinen Bridport, you don't need to fear them. Come and join in and make this year a "U-turn" for yourself to the better. Learn the art of self defence, become confident, fit and healthy, you will loose these extra pounds too and identify yourself with a strong community: The Ichinen Bridport Martial Artists.

See you next Thursday at 6.45pm in the Dojo at British Legion Hall, Victoria Grove, Bridport.

                           Happy new year!

Self defence in Bridport = Ichinen Bridport

I remember very well last year, when we had a safety seminar at West Bay with members of bar staff and doormen from Bridport. Here is a link to the post from April 2012. And I remember well what the head of the local police said about it. In other words: "Not necessary in Bridport".

And here we are. Saturday night in Bridport there was a knife incident near Mountfield. Three people got arrested, a helicoptor was involved and luckily no one got seriously hurt or injured by the knives the thugs had been carrying. You'll probably read  the whole story in the Bridport News this week.

What comes to my mind being-prepared-is-better-than-not.

These are the 10 most common (street) attacks according to law enforcement

As we say, we here at Ichinen Bridport do not want to “invent the wheel new”; therefore the following listing of common attacks will be the first set we concentrate on.

This is based on information supplied by Law Enforcement.

We set up scenarios that mirror the top 10 street attacks. Students will learn and understand the dynamics of the situation as well as the techniques that can be used to deal with these nasty most common attacks.

8. A broken bottle or glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

What's the answer to the outbreak of violence?

After the latest school massacre in the USA in December 2012 American teachers are booking courses how to use firearms. Since this last deadly shooting at a US school there is a very controversy discussion about what to do to avoid similar shootings and killings in the future.

While the American president wants to introduce tougher rules to possess a gun, the weapon lobby arguments with some teachers, those they rather book a course, learn to use a firearm in the hope they can save children’s and their own life in an event like the Newtown massacre.

Some teacher in the US even say, they will wear a gun in the future, although illegal and risking the job, but to protect themselves and the children. Courses to learn the gun handling were fully booked after the shooting and it seems people only can see one solution to this problem.

But how wrong they all are!

According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle. Read the full story on FOX NATION.

But what does it mean for us here in the UK where guns are not around everywhere as in the USA?

According to an article from the 25th of January in the MAIL ONLINE, 40 primary school pupils are expelled every day for attacks on staff, shocking  figures revealed yesterday. The violence is so endemic that exclusions for assaulting teachers are now more common in primaries than in  secondary schools.

If you worried as a teacher, come and join a Jiu-Jitsu club and learn the art of self defense. This could be one answer.

Picture above: Master Horst Lindenau teaches children the art of Jiu-Jitsu at the BAE headquarters in the studio of self defense (SDS Wilhelmshaven) in Germany 1989.

Master Horst: "Those children, they have been in contact with the martial arts and especially Jiu-Jitsu are much less likely involved in any aggressive or violent behaviour." This could be answer two.

They used pick-axe handles, baseball bats, hammers and knives

The Guardian online reported about the killing of two students in southern France, which took only two minutes.

…Kevin N. and Sofiane T., both 21, were attacked in a park on Friday night for reasons that are still unclear, but local accounts suggested it was because one of their younger brothers had looked at someone "the wrong way" outside school. A crowd of around 12 young men, believed to include teenagers, hit the men with pick-axe handles, baseball bats, hammers and knives, taking two minutes to kill one, while the other died shortly after in hospital…

The full story you can read here http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/02/france-killings-two-students-hollande

And don't think, oh well, that's France. Unfortunately it can happen anywhere. And unfortunately it happens.

Here at Ichinen Bridport we learn to fight attackers they are armed too.

Being prepared is better than not

Thank you Lewis for your views about the article in the Bridport News regarding the knife seminar last month. What the police officer said in the article is fine, but I too have a different opinion about it. Fact is, when I came to Bridport more than 20 years ago (where's the the time gone?), the local Bobbies wore their traditional uniforms (as seen on TV). Today police officers in Bridport wear on night duty, stab west, leather gloves and taser gun. That's how the situation has changed. And why should the individual not prepare himself too for the changed situation and "being prepared"?

Knife defense seminar in the Bridport News

This is what the Bridport News reported about the knife seminar for the No 10 staff. Although the Bridport police says, that crime and violence is not a big issue for our town, I know what I witness and what I have seen over the last 20 years here. It has gone worse, that's for sure. Just think about the police officers them self. 20 years ago they been dressed like you and me, today the wear safety armour and pepper spray and some have these electric shockers. And it was not only once I have seen ( first time last year) armed officers on East Street, because of the violence. Ok, they have a statistic, which tells us, Bridport crime has gone down. But haven't we learned that already at school? Only trust a statistic, which is done by yourself! I prefer rather to be safe than sorry.
